Industry evidence

Better size guidance.
A stronger booking journey.

Published self-storage research gives operators a reason to consider visual guidance near the size decision. Here is what the evidence supports, and how to apply it to your website.

By Lockstep Spatial · Third-party findings, with sources and scope

Extra Space Storage · February 2014 announcement

12% more online reservations in a size-help video test.

Extra Space Storage reported a 12% increase in online reservations when storage-size help videos were included on reservation webpages. The announcement describes relevant video helping customers at the point where they could reserve a unit.

The practical lesson is placement: size information can support the decision on the page where that decision happens. The result came from another operator’s historical video test. It does not establish a 12% uplift for Lockstep or for interactive tours.

Interactive visuals addressed a recurring size question.

UserTesting’s Extra Space Storage case study describes testing a virtual tour on the size guide. It reports that interacting with helpful visuals reduced confusion about what could fit inside a unit.

That finding is relevant to the question a size label leaves unanswered. Customers can read the area, but still need to understand the interior proportions and how belongings occupy the available space.

The separate 3% result.

The case study also reports a 3% lift in move-in conversion across more than 2,000 properties. This belongs to a wider optimisation programme using Quantum Metric and UserTesting, including work on designs, copy and the customer journey. It does not isolate the tour’s contribution.

Remote unit exploration is already part of storage marketing.

In its 2019 article, Attic Self Storage described VR-enabled store tours showing facility interiors, different unit sizes and how much customers might fit inside them. It made the tours available on mobile and desktop as well as through VR headsets.

This is evidence of the approach being used in the industry. The article does not provide a conversion result, establish identical technology to Lockstep or imply an affiliation.

Put useful guidance beside the choice.

Our recommendation is to match the experience to the decision your customer needs to make. A calculator suggests a size from their belongings. An interactive tour explains the interior through empty and furnished views. A walkthrough video can introduce the unit before they explore further.

On a unit-selection page.

Place the tour beside the size and description, with the existing booking action still easy to reach. The customer can investigate the unit without losing their next step.

On a size-guide page.

Connect an item-based estimate to relevant unit exploration, then provide a clear route to availability, a quote or your team.

On a facility page.

Introduce the units available at that location and direct visitors into the appropriate size guide or enquiry route.

These are proposed placements, not a claim that every booking platform supports the same installation. We review your website and agree the route with you or your agency.

Measure the question you want to answer.

Choose one change and one meaningful outcome. A size-guide tour might be evaluated for customer understanding; a reservation-page video might be tested against online reservations. Completed move-ins are a different outcome again.

  1. Keep the comparison fair.

Where traffic allows, compare versions with and without the chosen experience over the same period. Keep prices, offers and the rest of the journey consistent.

  2. Check the whole route.

Confirm the experience works on mobile, the controls are understandable and the next booking or enquiry step remains accessible.

  3. Separate use from results.

Tour views and onward clicks show engagement. They do not, on their own, demonstrate additional bookings. Your booking provider or agency may need to help connect those outcomes.

For a smaller site, a handful of visitors or a simple before-and-after comparison may not support a firm conversion conclusion. Agree what can be measured reliably before describing the result.

Sources and interpretation.

The percentages refer to different interventions and outcomes and cannot be added together. None is a Lockstep customer result or forecast for your facility.

Before you ask.

Which product should I choose?

Animated gives customers item-based sizing, branded animated units and real-size AR on compatible phones, without unit photographs. Bespoke adds photographed interactive tours and walkthrough videos. Compare pricing and inclusions.

Can I try Lockstep Bespoke before subscribing?

Yes. Review your free preview, then approve it and start your subscription or request a 14-day live trial by email. The trial starts after your approved installation is live and checked. It has no subscription charge or automatic paid conversion. Confirm by email to continue; otherwise we deactivate it. Any agreed switching credit starts with the paid subscription.

What do you need from us?

Animated needs your business name, main colour or website, each store’s name, area and postcode, and prices per size, marked weekly or monthly. Bespoke also needs unit dimensions and photographs; we send the photo instructions. You can enquire before gathering the setup details.

Can you arrange professional photography?

Yes, subject to location and availability. We can arrange a capture partner and quote photography and suitable drone footage separately, with an upfront charge agreed before booking. Interactive facility maps are available only as part of this requested photo-capture package.

What if an agency manages our website?

We provide the embed and coordinate with your website contact. On a page supporting custom HTML, adding the code usually takes a few minutes. Booking-platform placement and any dedicated connections are reviewed first.

Already paid annually for CalcuMate?

Eligible unused annual fees can qualify for a Bespoke switching discount, capped at six months’ worth. We need your invoice and prepaid end date and confirm the payments before you commit. The offer does not automatically apply to Animated. Read the eligibility and worked example.

Does the calculator guarantee everything will fit?

No. Size recommendations, furnished views and AR are guides. Check critical dimensions, oversized items, openings, weight limits where relevant and packing requirements before confirming suitability.

Are branding, AI guidance and GEO included?

Animated includes your business name, main colour and multi-site GEO. Bespoke includes optional operator branding and an optional AI tour guide; multi-site GEO is separately scoped. Both subscriptions include analytics and monthly reporting.

How does “See it in your room” work?

In the Animated example on a compatible phone, open “What’s inside?” and choose “See it in your room.” Place the unit at real size on your floor and explore empty or furnished views. No app or headset is required; camera permission applies. The AR feature uses no cookies and collects no customer data. Separate calculator analytics and enquiries are not covered by that AR statement.
